Cybersecurity ecosystem mapping

SECURITYMADEIN.LU has launched the concept of the cybersecurity ecosystem 3 years ago to feature the local cyber security community providing users a central and easy access to all relevant actors and initiatives of the Luxembourg cyber security ecosystem. Since then, it has grown considerably, to find out your way in this prolific forest, you’ll need a map. This is what Luxinnovation and SECURITYMADEIN.LU have designed, in order to make the whole sector more visible and to better know who’s who and who is doing what.

The mapping has been officially presented on Monday 14 October, at the Cybersecurity Competence Center (C3), in the presence of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Economy, Étienne Schneider.

Depicting the different actors of the public and private sector, as well as their specialization, this mapping was developed jointly by the Market Intelligence Team of Luxinnovation, the national agency for the promotion of innovation, and by SECURITYMADEIN.LU, mandated since 2010 by the Ministry of the Economy to promote and strengthen information security in Luxembourg.

The figures are remarkable:

  • 304 companies are listed in the ecosystem
  • 22% are start-ups
  • 24% are focused on cybersecurity as a core-businness
  • 46% of the enterprises are less than 5 years old
  • 1000 jobs have been created by the sector

Born to be alive

By definition, an ecosystem is a living system. This one is particularly dynamic and open to newcomers.

“The positive development of the national cybersecurity ecosystem allows Luxembourg to fully benefit from the opportunities offered by digitalization, while also responding to the risks brought by a constantly increasing connectivity,” said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Economy Étienne Schneider when commenting on the mapping. “The efforts made in the past to be better protected against cyberattacks have made it possible to position Luxembourg as a ‘safe haven’ at the international level and turn cybersecurity into an economic attractiveness factor for the country.”

As Pascal Steichen (CEO at SECURITYMADEIN.LU) emphasised, the dynamism of the Ecosystem that has already placed our country in the world-class champions of cybersecurity: Luxembourg ranked 11th in the Global Cybersecurity Index. It is also home to the world’s first data embassy opened by Estonia, and future developments are guided by the national cybersecurity strategy for 2018-2020.

A broad scope of services

304 Luxembourg companies, offering at least one cybersecurity service or solution, were identified in the mapping. This number covers both highly specialized service providers and companies such as IT consultants, lawyers and insurance firms whose service offering includes a cybersecurity aspect.

Companies offer a diversified solutions portfolio, including solutions for each stage of the cyber-risk management value chain. The main focus is on risk identification and system protection. The 7 types of most frequently offered services, which represent 60% of the national market, are:

  • governance, risk and compliance;
  • identity and access management;
  • data security;
  • asset management;
  • penetration testing;
  • backup and storage;
  • awareness and training.

A new platform

In 2020, a new national cybersecurity platform, gathering all the actors and activities of the ecosystem, will be launched. This under the umbrella of the new national brand:
